Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions. If you don't find the answer to your question, please contact me.
How much homework will my child get each week?
Your child will get a homework packet every Friday. On Monday-Thursday he or she is expected to do one page of math. There are also spelling activities and sometimes a reading comprehension activity. Your child should also read for 20 to 25 minutes each day. Your child may do his or her homework each night or do it all at once. It's up to him or her.
What if your child forgets to bring the homework on Friday?
Your child can turn the homework in one day late on Monday. Try to remind him or her to bring it next time. If he or she puts the homework in his or her backpack on Thursday night (or the night before it is due) he or she won't forget it. Turning in late homework on a regular basis is not acceptable.
What if my child loses his or her homework packet?
Ask Mrs. McKelvey for a new one as soon as you find it is missing or download homework file from this web site.
How can I get another book report and book log?
Lost the monthly book report? No worries. Check the "Assignments/Book Reports" section of our web page. Next time, try hanging the book report with a magnet on the refrigerator ... then your child will know exactly where it is.
When is the monthly book report due?
The book report is due the last school day of each month. Don't forget to turn in the Home Reading Log also. (Occasionally, if there's a holiday the book report may be due the first school day of the next month.)
What if your child doesn't read the required 400 pages in one month?
Next time try making a plan for how many pages your child will read each day. That way he or she won't come up short. Also, have your child try his or her best to make up the pages the following month. Reading is like any skill...the more you do it, the better you become at it. So please encourage your child to read!
What if I read more than 400 pages in one month?
That's fantastic! Your extra pages will be kept in a "bank" and added to your totals. Extra pages add up to even more popcorn pieces. Earn enough extra popcorn pieces and receive a special award at the end of Third Grade.
What do should your child do if he or she doesn't do well on a test or other assignment?
I often review the test with your child in class. You can help by reviewing the test at home as well. If mistakes are made on assignments, have your child correct them and return the assignment so that I can recheck it.
What if your child is sick and misses school?
The first priority is to rest and get better. Your child's neighbor will fill out a "Good Neighbor Assignment Sheet" for your child. He or she can catch up the missed work over the weekend.
