Throughout Topic 4 we've looked at different strategies for subtraction besides the traditional algorithm...or as we call it the "mom and dad way". Check out some of our strategies below.

Zucchini pudding with Joseph's dad
We visited the school garden on Friday and picked 17 zucchinis...some as large as a cat! The students volunteered to take them home and turn them into something fabulous. Each student claimed that his or her mom or dad made the best zucchini bread, muffins, or whatever. And, thanks to our wonderful parents today we started feasting on all the treats that arrived. Yum! Yum! Yum! I guess the students were right...I ate some of the best zucchini bread and muffins I've ever had today. Tomorrow we'll continue our feast. Perhaps, you can share your recipes here.

Sharing Me Collages
We've spent the last two weeks reading Judy Moody by Megan McDonald. Judy is a third grader and funny, moody, surprising character. Her third grade teacher assigns the class a Me Collage. The collage is supposed to tell the class all about the person. So last week the students in our class made and shared their very own, fabulous Me Collages with our class. Each one was wonderful in its own way. You can check out all the collages on our photos website. Good job everyone!

So how are your Moon observations going? Take a minute and post to our class blog. What are you observing? Anything interesting you'd like to share with the class?
Check out this Moon calendar on the FOSS website http://fossweb.com/modules3-6/SunMoonandStars/activities/lunarcalendar.html. It shows you what the Moon looks like on any given date.

Sun observations
We've started our first FOSS science unit titled the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Last week we tracked the Sun's movement throughout the day. We discovered that the Sun appears to move across the sky from east to west by drawing pictures of our partners pointing at the Sun. Next we'll observe changes in our shadows...that is once the weather clears up and we can actually see the Sun.
Check out the fun activities on the FOSS website at http://fossweb.com/modules3-6/SunMoonandStars/index.html.

Hello New Students,
Welcome to Third Grade and a new school year. I'm sure you are going to love third grade. What are you looking forward to doing or learning in third grade? Post your comments to our class blog. Click on the "Comments" button. You're comments will show up once I approve them.
Not so good at typing? Then practice, practice, practice because you will use a laptop a lot this school year. Check out this fun website that will teach you how to type http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/   Oh, and they talk a little funny...just like me but you'll get used to it.

Thanks to our Three Sisters Garden we have an abundance of zucchini. Mrs. Renly helped out and made zucchini bread with the students in the class. The bread was delicious. Thanks Mrs. Renly!!!!!!

What a terrific job students did on their sculpture projects. We created sculptures using a piece of wood, a wire coathanger, and a ladies pantyhose. This is abstract art and students envisioned their sculptures as many different creatures or objects...like fish, birds, ducks.

Our Three Sisters Garden is growing in leaps and bounds. Every time we visit the garden we're astounded at home much the squash has grown. We're hoping to make zucchini bread next week from our harvest. We picked the first zucchini last week and ate it fresh with a little Ranch dressing. Now that's one huge zucchini!
