This month's genre for our Home Reading is non-fiction. I'd like you to try and read at least one non-fiction book that's related to our social studies units on geography and Native Americans or read a book related to our science unit on energy and matter. Here's a few topics you may want to read about:
  • California
  • Earthquakes and other natural disasters
  • Native Americans of California, such as the Kumeyaay
  • Sacramento, our state capitol
  • Climate
  • Conservation
  • Solar energy
  • Water cycle
Then I'd like you to share any fascinating or interesting facts you've learned here on our class blog. Don't forget to include the title and author of the book you read. Also, would you recommend this book to your friends? If so, why? Happy reading and I look forward to seeing your comments.

So how are your Moon observations going? Take a minute and post to our class blog. What are you observing? Anything interesting you'd like to share with the class?
Check out this Moon calendar on the FOSS website http://fossweb.com/modules3-6/SunMoonandStars/activities/lunarcalendar.html. It shows you what the Moon looks like on any given date.

Sun observations
We've started our first FOSS science unit titled the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Last week we tracked the Sun's movement throughout the day. We discovered that the Sun appears to move across the sky from east to west by drawing pictures of our partners pointing at the Sun. Next we'll observe changes in our shadows...that is once the weather clears up and we can actually see the Sun.
Check out the fun activities on the FOSS website at http://fossweb.com/modules3-6/SunMoonandStars/index.html.

After the reaction
What happens when you combine baking soda and vinegar? You get a chemical reaction. In this case a whole new substance was created. When the baking soda and vinegar combined they created a gas called carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide gas inflated the balloon.
Can you find any other examples of chemical reactions? If you find an experiment we can try in the classroom, please post your idea here.
